Very excited for this acrostic find! This ‘DEAREST’ ring is a mix of natural and created gems that spell Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz. Set in solid 9 karat gold.
Acrostic jewellery spells out a word using the first letter of each gemstone. It was created so the giver of the piece could relay a loving sentiment or signify an important occasion. 'Dearest' and 'Regard' were popular phrases. It first became popular in the French court in the 18th century and was apparently invented by a jeweller named Jean-Baptise Mellerio, who was a favourite of Marie Antoinette.
Size P (17.75mm internal diameter)
Condition
This piece is in good condition. The piece looks to be antique and there are signs of its age on the gold. You'll notice the diamond is slightly smaller than the other stones (see pictures), which is a common feature in acrostic pieces.
